As a Senior Practitioner in the Family and Friends Team, you’ll safeguard and promote the welfare of Birmingham’s most vulnerable children and young people. We’ll look to you to deliver high quality services keeping wellbeing and safety at the heart of your approach.  You’ll work in close partnership with the wider team, to ensure each child’s wishes are met at every step of the way.  The teams undertake detailed assessments and provide support to family and friends carers who are applying to look after children known to them. They also assess and support applicants for special guardianship orders across the city.  Much of the work is Court directed and you will be required to have a good understanding of Court processes, care proceedings work and permanence options for children.

You will be involved in quality assuring assessments, supporting workers to ensure that assessments are robust and completed in a timely manner.  In addition you will provide supervision to social workers and senior social workers in the team.  You will manage enquires via the Senior Practitioner duty system in a timely manner, ensuring accurate and consistent advice is provided. As a senior practitioner you will work very closely within the wider adoption and fostering services as well as with our colleagues in the area teams. You will also work closely with the team manager in managing the staff undertaking family and friends work to ensure the continued development of the service.

Previous experience at Senior Practitioner Level would be advantageous but is not essential to apply.


If you have 3 years or more post qualifying experience & are  joining us from another authority; you will receive a recruitment incentive payment of £3,000 (subject to tax and national insurance deductions).

If you stay with one of our frontline teams for 27 months  and remain with us; you will receive a retention payment of £2,400, paid quarterly in your pay package.
