About the role

As an Independent Reviewing Officer, you’ll have the opportunity to make a real difference - to the way we practice social work and support our children in care and care leavers.

We’ll look to you to ensure care planning is effective and timely, and that the voice of the young person is heard throughout. You’ll be instrumental to ensuring young people can understand and contribute to the decisions that affect their lives.

As part of our diverse and experienced team, you’ll enjoy significant autonomy in organising your own work across a varied and challenging caseload. What’s more, you’ll have a manageable caseload and the time and support you need to make a difference -.

We are working to support a hugely diverse city with a wide range of services; our mission is clear and in line with the overarching vision of the Trust: that is to improve the quality of life and outcomes for children in care and care leavers across Birmingham – now and in the future

We’re continuing our improvement journey focused on driving up best practice and standards across the Trust. This is your chance to be part of that journey. We’ll support you to challenge poor practice when necessary and encourage you to support SW in delivering a quality service – helping Birmingham Children's Trust to deliver its commitment and responsibilities as a corporate parent.

Thanks to a recent partnership with CAFCASS, we have raised the profile and confidence of the Independent Reviewing Service. As well as maintaining a high level of challenge, our new management team is shaping a service that works collaboratively to influence practice and identify where support is needed.

Getting it right for vulnerable children and young people across our diverse population is key  - This is why we’re here.

What we’re looking for

  • Full Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration.
  • Social Work qualification (5 years minimum).
  • Substantial experience of working with vulnerable children and their families preferably including at team manager level.
  • The ability to recognize good practice and planning - and the confidence, resilience and communication skills to effectively challenge poor practice.
